Qatar Holding’s mergers and acquisitions boss Anthony Armstrong has been named as the Gulf’s most influential expat, in a new list published by Arabian Business today.

Armstrong heads up the M&A team at Qatar Holding, the investment arm of the Qatar Investment Authority. The US banker led the buyout of Harrods earlier this year, and is overseeing an estimated $32 billion of global investment this year.

The Expat Power List [pics] features the most influential non-Arabs working in the GCC.  This year’s list contains a record 28 new entries; with UK born Aidan Birkett ranked number two. Birkett is the accountant responsible for restructuring the Dubai World debt.

In third place is Jean Paul Villain [pics] , head of strategy at the Abu Dhabi Investment Authority, another SWF. Villain, who topped the list last year, has overseen the accumulation of an enviable international asset portfolio during his time in Abu Dhabi, and continues to keep a close eye on distressed assets in Europe and beyond.

The highest placed Indian on the list is Landmark Group founder Mickey Jagtiani [pics], ranked in seventh place, one place above Etihad CEO James Hogan [pics]. Emirates Airline president Tim Clark is tenth on the list, down one place from last year.

There are a total of 14 nationalities represented in this year’s list, working in 13 sectors across the six GCC states. There are more US nationals [see pics] than any other on the list – Americans account for 12 of the entrants. India has 10 entrants [pics] while the UK [pics] has nine entries in the list.
