Michael Bitzer has been the driving force behind the UAE's first state-backed health insurance company, which launched in 2005.
Five years later, Daman Health is the country's largest insurer, offering cover to nearly two million people. Overall, the firm is now providing vital services to over a fifth of the UAE's fast-growing population.
Born in Germany in 1961, Bitzer gained his PhD in medicine and business administration, before spending a period of time in the German army, working across several medical units including out-patient clinics, hospitals and general staff divisions.
Following his time in the army, Bitzer worked in the pharmaceutical and strategy consulting industries prior to joining MedNet Gulf as general manager in October 2001. Some three years later, he secured the regional managing director role and later left the company to set up Daman Health in Abu Dhabi.
