BMMI is a company with roots that go back as far as 1865 with a company set up to support the new shipping service to the Gulf from Bombay, operated by the British India Steam Navigation Company (BI).

In December 1951, the company was absorbed into the Inchcape Group, a London-based trading company. The company continued to grow and in 1999 the Inchcape Group, as part of their disinvestments in the region, sold the company to the local Bahraini shareholders. The company for the first time became a wholly owned Bahraini company quoted on the Bahrain Stock Exchange.

The company has an annual turnover exceeding BHD 50 million (USD 130 million) and a market capitalization of USD 300 million.
