Saudi Arabia to ban Abbott's Similac baby formula

Saudi Arabia said on Monday it would ban and withdraw plastic and metallic cans of Similac powdered infant formula for possibly containing beetles and their larvae.

Last week, Abbott Laboratories announced a voluntary recall of about 5 million units of its top-selling product but limited the recall to the United States, Puerto Rico, Guam and countries in the Caribbean.

The Saudi Food and Drug Authority (SFDA) said it planned "protective measures to ensure the product did not enter the kingdom, investigate its presence and withdraw it from local markets".

A spokesman for Abbott in Saudi Arabia, the Arab world's largest economy, said Similac sold locally was manufactured in Ireland and was safe for consumption.

"Saudi Arabia has not been impacted by these recalls because the product sold here is made in Ireland while the recalled batches were made in the United States," the spokesman said. "We have taken the initiative of contacting SFDA to explain this point before it issued the statement today." (Reuters)

Breastfeeding for baby children
Posted by grexia, Los Angeles, USA on Wednesday 29 September 2010 at 08:56 UAE time

Breastfeeding for baby children is the best way to promote healthy growth. But with so many American women passing up on breastfeeding for career or medical reasons, infants are forced toward a different food source. Thus, formula feeding has become a multi-billion-dollar industry.

I found this here: Similac recall 2010 What every parent should knowWhen something like the Similac recall 2010 comes along, the implications are even more frightening under current circumstances. Abbott Laboratories, the parent company for Similac baby formula, has been less than forthcoming with details, which has frustrated hundreds of thousands of parents.

The recall as per my research is effecting production in one plant in the US. It should be made clear to all that this plant is not serving middle east countries. All such announcement should be dealt with with much care. People are scare now!!! are you happy.
