Bahrain Telecommunications Co - or Batelco - CEO Peter Kaliaropoulos has had a busy year. The introduction of a third telecom operator to Bahrain in March saw the firm's profits decline 20 percent in the second quarter. Despite the tougher environment the operator still managed to increase its total number of clients to 7.3 million.
As competition increases at home Kaliaropoulos is charged with expanding operations into new markets such as South East Asia and Africa and has earmarked up to $2bn for acquisitions. Since joining Batelco in June 2005, Kaliaropoulos has set up regional operations in Saudi Arabia, Jordan, Kuwait, Yemen and Egypt.
Prior to joining Batelco, Kaliaropoulos held various senior executive roles in the telecoms industry with SingTel Optus Business in Australia, StarHub in Singapore, Clear in New Zealand and BT Asia Pacific in both Singapore and Australia.
