Sharif Eye Centers- Dubai has launched a dedicated wing for Diabetic Eye Care. On the 22nd of October 2012, in partnership with Bausch + Lomb and Lunatus, they hosted an event that celebrated the opening of this new wing. Whilst the Diabetic Eye Care Center has been open for the past two months, it is considered a soft opening, with the official announcement of its presence occurring at this event.

There were three lectures to commemorate the occasion: one from visiting British Consultant Ophthalmologist Dr. Ian Graham Duguid (Imperial College Healthcare- London); another from the Head of Vitreo-Retinal Surgery of the new Diabetic Eye Care Center Dr. Ahmed El Khashab; while the third lecture was given by the founder and medical director of Sharif Eye Centers Medical Group, Dr. Khaled Sharif. The focus of the lectures was on Diabetic Retinopathy, its management, and effects (such as Retinal Detachment).

With a large number of the highest rated ophthalmologists, endocrinologists, and other specialty doctors and medical professionals attending, the main point of this event was what came through most clearly- the state of Diabetes prevalence in this country is overwhelming, and not enough awareness or care is given to its effect on the eye. The opening of this new Diabetic Eye Care Center is most welcome progress.

As a dedicated center for Diabetic Eye diseases, the center provides detailed examinations of the eye from the cornea and lens to the retina and optic nerve, using HD-Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT), fluorescence angiography and auto-fluorescence imaging techniques, multi-color laser, a wide spectrum of intravitreal injections to improve vision, as well as minimally invasive retinal surgery and cataract phacoemulsification.
