Bawadi Mall, the biggest mall in Al Ain city, hosted an awareness campaign against smoking ‘Midwakh’, a kind of pipe used mainly in the Gulf, in association with students of United Arab Emirates University (UAEU) and Oasis Hospital Al Ain.

The campaign, which calls for quitting this habit, reached out to a large segment of people as the mall witnessed record footfall since the beginning of the second quarter. The mall attracted 750,000 in April 2013, an 11 per cent increase over the same period last year.

The campaign mix included documentaries, brochures as well as free public medical check-ups. The students of UAEU, along with the team from Oasis Hospital, offered tips and advice on how to quit smoking ‘Midwakh’.

Khalid Shraim, Senior Marketing Manager, Bawadi Mall said: “The campaign attracted the attention of a large number of visitors as the mall witnessed high footfall since the beginning of April. We thank all those who contributed to make this campaign a success. We will continue to host similar events on a regular basis.”

“Many organisations in the UAE find Bawadi Mall an ideal destination for hosting social events. The space available and the huge number of visitors, in addition to the pleasant climate almost throughout the year, have made the mall a preferred venue for holding such events,” he added.

The campaign organizers expressed concern over the habit of smoking “Midwakh” that harms not only the smokers but also their surroundings. The campaign was promoted widely on social media channels, highlighting the negative effects of using ‘Midwakh’.

Bawadi Mall has registered a record number of visitors in 2012. The initial statistics show impressive increase in the first and second quarters of 2013. Moreover, Al Ain city in general is increasingly strengthening its position as a regional tourism destination in the region.
