Its driving force is the irrepressible Yusuff Ali MA, a man who certainly relishes a challenge and who has become something of a hero to entrepreneurs in the region.
According to the group's own literature, EMKE caters daily to over 320,000 customers in the GCC and enjoys over 32 percent of the total retail market share. Last year's turnover was $3.1bn, justifying the company's claim to be one of the biggest Indian-owned conglomerates in the Gulf. EMKE employs over 23,000 people.
Last year, Arabian Business awarded Ali its annual Business Excellence award to honour his and the group's successes over the preceding twelve months.
